The new Madrid office strengthens Stephenson Harwood’s presence in Europe and enhances its ability to support domestic and international clients across a broad range of transactional and dispute resolution matters

The opening marks a significant step in Stephenson Harwood’s international growth strategy, strengthening its presence in Europe and expanding its capabilities to advise clients on domestic and cross-border matters across key sectors including private capital, funds, energy transition, infrastructure, finance, tax, and dispute resolution.

Stephenson Harwood has officially launched its Madrid office, which will begin operations on 1 June 2026 with a team of eight partners led by Madrid Managing Partner Juan Oñate.

The new office represents a major milestone in the firm’s expansion across Europe, reinforcing its ability to support both Spanish and international clients while further consolidating its position across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

“We’re incredibly excited to be launching our office in Spain, where we’ve brought together a group of high-quality lawyers with strong reputations in the market,” said Eifion Morris, Chief Executive Officer of Stephenson Harwood. “Just as importantly, they’re the type of people you want to work alongside - commercial, straightforward, and very hands-on.”

The Madrid office has been established as a full-service platform, with a balanced offering between transactional and dispute resolution work. Initially, the team will focus on two strategic sectors: Private Capital & Funds and Energy Transition & Infrastructure, while also providing expertise in corporate, tax, real estate, finance, restructuring and insolvency, special situations, litigation, and arbitration.

“The firm is based in key locations across Europe, the Middle East and Asia – where our clients are investing and where they need us most,” Eifion added. “Spain is attracting international investment, especially in areas such as technology and energy transition, and is an important market for many of our clients. Opening in Madrid felt like a natural next step. For Spanish clients, we offer an international platform combined with an agile, partner-led model that clients in Spain are increasingly turning to.”

Commenting on the launch, Juan Oñate stated: “What makes this launch truly special is the team of partners we’ve assembled. Each brings deep expertise and a strong reputation in their field, and together we share a commitment to delivering commercial, partner-led advice. Being part of a truly international firm means we can offer clients in Spain direct access to global expertise, while maintaining the personal approach they value.”

The Madrid office launches with eight partners covering a broad range of practice areas:

  • Jesús Almoguera (Litigation & Arbitration), specialising in corporate, finance, restructuring, insolvency, and domestic and international arbitration.

  • Carmen Alonso (Restructuring & Corporate), with extensive experience in restructurings, refinancings, M&A transactions, and joint ventures.
