Portuguese law firm Miranda has appointed Nuno Cabeçadas as its new managing partner, succeeding Diogo Xavier da Cunha, who now takes on the roles of Senior Partner and Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Miranda has appointed Nuno Cabeçadas as its new managing partner, succeeding Diogo Xavier da Cunha, who now takes on the roles of Senior Partner and Chairman of the Board of Directors.

This leadership transition forms part of a broader reshaping of Miranda’s governance framework, aimed at reinforcing the alignment between strategic direction and operational execution. As part of this institutional strengthening, the firm has also created an Ethics and Risk Committee, chaired by partner Ana Pinelas Pinto, with Luís Borges Rodrigues and Lília Tomé de Azevedo serving as committee members.

A central element of the new structure is the Executive Committee, composed of the Managing Partner, Nuno Gouveia, and Sofia Martins, which will be responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations and executing the firm’s strategic agenda. All three also sit on the Board of Directors, ensuring close coordination between executive management and long-term objectives. The Board, chaired by Diogo Xavier da Cunha, also includes Catarina Távora and Ricardo Alves Silva as non-executive directors.

Nuno Cabeçadas holds a law degree from the University of Coimbra and an MBA from the Lisbon School of Economics and Management (ISEG). He joined Miranda 23 years ago as a trainee and has since built a distinguished career within the firm. From 2004 to 2010, he was seconded to the firm’s associated office in Maputo, where he gained valuable international experience. A partner since 2013 and a Board member since 2021, his practice has focused on banking & finance and project finance, advising on major transactions and infrastructure projects across the firm’s jurisdictions.

Commenting on his appointment, Cabeçadas stated: “It is a great honor and responsibility to take on this role at a time when the legal profession is undergoing profound transformation, and innovation—both within and beyond the legal sector—is evolving at an unprecedented pace. This environment is especially demanding for a firm with Miranda’s international identity and mission. It challenges us to adapt, evolve, and continue delivering the unique value proposition that defines us in the markets we serve.”

Diogo Xavier da Cunha served as managing partner for the past 10 years, a period marked by steady growth, international expansion, and cultural cohesion within the firm. Reflecting on the transition, he said: “It is with great pride that I now witness a new generation of partners—the third since our founder, Agostinho Pereira de Miranda—take the reins of an international organization that today unites more than 250 professionals across four continents. The new executive team will have my full support, now from a role that I trust will be slightly less intense, but no less valuable to Miranda and the Miranda Alliance.”
