Chilean startup Runway achieves unicorn status

Runway, a Chilean AI startup founded by Alejandro Matamala and Cristóbal Valenzuela, has achieved the mythical $1 billion valuation, turning it into the country’s latest unicorn.

The company recently closed a $100 million Series D round with a cloud services provider, which tripled its valuation from $500 million to $1.5 billion

The latest fundraising followed a $50 million Series C round led by Felicis Partners, investors in Canva, Twitch, Shopify and Wish.

Runway develops proprietary algorithms and is dedicated to research and development in the field of generative artificial intelligence, which makes it possible to understand patterns in images, videos and texts and based on them generate something completely new, which does not exist on the web.

"It is a totally new area with a technology called transformers, which for example has led the emergence of Chat GPT, which empowers this system," Valenzuela told DF MAS portal in January.

One of its success stories is the use of its platform by the producers of the Oscar-winning film ‘Everything Everywhere at Once’. The company’s platform has also been used by Alicia Keys' producer, as well as NBA and MLB teams, and Stephen Colbert's ‘Late Show’.
