Von Wobeser y Sierra strengthens tax team with new partner and counsel

Mexican law firm Von Wobeser y Sierra announced the incorporation of Alejandro Torres as a partner, Luis Enrique Torres as counsel, and two associates, to expand and consolidate the tax practice, following the transition of former partner Fernando Moreno to of counsel of the firm.

“The team that joins Von Wobeser y Sierra brings decades of first-tier experience, a proven track record, and wide recognition in the legal forum for providing premium advice on tax matters, including consultancy for cross-border and domestic M&A, financing, investment, and other transactions, as well as soft-landing, international corporate structuring and regulatory work for domestic and multinational companies doing business in Mexico, with an emphasis on double taxation treaties, as well as dispute resolution work using alternative dispute resolution mechanisms or ADRs, along with administrative and judicial proceedings,” the law firm said.

Alejandro Torres joins as head partner of the tax consultancy, controversies and strategic litigation practice, bringing more than 30 years of experience in this area.

Alejandro is a strategic advisor to domestic and multinational companies regarding tax matters. He is an expert in contentious and revocation proceedings before the tax authorities, as well as in the resolution of complex tax controversies before Mexico’s tax ombudsman’s office (Prodecon), through the execution of conclusive agreements and other dispute resolution mechanisms provided by international treaties to which Mexico is a party. 

Alejandro has held positions in professional organizations such as leading the tax committee and the professional ethics committee of the Mexican Bar Association (BMA), and the vice-presidency of the tax committee of the International Bar Association (IBA).

Before joining Von Wobeser y Sierra, he was a partner at two of the leading firms specializing in tax matters in Mexico.

Alejandro obtained his law degree from Universidad Iberoamericana. He also holds an MBA from Cornell University, and a master’s degree in anti-corruption policies in Iberoamerica from the Universidad de Salamanca in Spain.

He is a doctoral candidate in Constitutional Law from Centro de Estudios Carbonell.

For his part, Luis Enrique Torres joins the firm as counsel, and who has more than 17 years’ experience in tax and administrative litigation, ADRs and consultancy regarding tax matters. He has significant experience in litigating complex matters before federal and state courts, as well as in constitutional appeals before the Mexican Supreme Court of Justice, representing both domestic and foreign clients in a wide range of sectors and industries.

He has remarkable experience in the use of ADRs for tax matters. Moreover, he offers tax consulting services for domestic and multinational companies doing business in Mexico, related to international corporate structuring, as well as for different type of transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, financing arrangements, investment instruments and fund formation, among others.

Luis Enrique obtained his law degree from Universidad de las Américas Puebla and holds a master’s degree in tax law from Universidad Panamericana.

Prior to joining Von Wobeser y Sierra, he was a partner at a boutique law firm and a senior associate at a recognized law firm specializing in tax matters in Mexico.

In addition, Juan Manuel Morán and Sheila Cruz join as associates and bring experience in representing domestic and multinational clients in tax-related matters.
