Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough has added Luis O’Naghten as a partner in international arbitration and dispute resolution in Miami, where the firm is building an international arbitration practice responsive to the needs of its clients, particularly those operating in and doing business with Latin America.
Luis comes to the firm with more than 30 years of experience in international arbitration and commercial litigation, with emphasis on disputes involving Latin America, in both Spanish and English, domestically and abroad.
His practice focuses on international financial frauds, energy, construction, telecommunication, and corporate commercial disputes and he has represented foreign sovereigns and parties adverse to foreign sovereigns, and provides advice to major international banks, US and foreign multinational corporations, energy companies, and companies involved in maritime disputes.
Prior to joining the firm, he was an international arbitration partner at Hughes Hubbard & Reed for four years, and prior to that he spent four years as a partner at Baker McKenzie, and which followed an eight-year stint as the chair of the international arbitration practice at Akerman.
He has also worked for law firm Greenberg Traurig, where he was a stakeholder between 1998 and 2005, and as an associate both at Holland & Knight and at White & Case.
He holds a JD from Columbia Law School in the US, and a BSFS in international economics from Georgetown University.
In addition to his work as an arbitration lawyer, since 2008 he has been an adjunct professor on the postgraduate course at the Universidad Panamericana in Mexico City, and an adjunct professor in arbitration at the University of Miami Law School.
