Cantón will lead the labor practice, which was founded in 2018 under the leadership of counsel Nadia González, and who will remain on the team alongside Cantón. She has been responsible for the creation, positioning and strengthening of the practice by providing specialized, high-level advice to businesses and ensuring their compliance with Mexican labor laws.
Cantón has advised domestic and foreign, public and private companies in all branches of industry, commerce and services, and is an expert in handling individual labor matters and in the resolution of collective disputes, it added.
The clients he has served include BlackRock, Accenture, BHP Billiton, Skandia, Pemex, Aeromexico, Mitsui and Chedraui, among others. He has also counseled the US government.
Prior to joining Galicia, Octavio Cantón was a partner in law firm Álvarez, Cantón y Peters, and is a specialist in labor law with extensive experience in all areas related to this field.
He has collaborated with the Mexican Academy of Labor Procedural Law and the Latin American Academy of Labor Procedural Law.
He holds a law degree from the Universidad Iberoamericana and has been a professor of labor law at undergraduate level, and founded the first master's degree program on human rights in Latin America at that same university, together with Santiago Corcuera.
He also holds a PhD from the same university and he is listed as a specialist in labor law by the Instituto de Investigaciones Jurídicas of the National University of Mexico (UNAM).
In 2001 he obtained a postgraduate specialization degree from the University of Castilla La Mancha in Spain in labor relations, employment and social protection in globalization.
