The Portuguese João Negrão will be the new executive director of the European Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), replacing the Belgian Christian Archambeau, in office since October 2018. Negrão will become the second Portuguese to lead the EUIPO, after António Campinos, who held the position between 2010 and 2018 and is currently the head of the European Patent Office, based in Munich.
The EUIPO is a decentralized EU agency based in Alicantevand it is responsible for managing the registration of European Union trademarks and registered Community designs, which provide intellectual property protection in all EU member states.
Negrão's appointment must now be ratified by the EU Council of Ministers, a procedure that is expected to take place on July 25. He will take office in October, when Archambeau's term of office ends.
João Negrão was the current president of the Board of Appeal of the EUIPO, in which he has held various positions since joining it in 2010. He had also previously worked for nine years at the Portuguese National Institute of Industrial Property.
