Pachama recently made news by raising $55 million in a funding round and being backed by Bill Gates' Breakthrough Energy Ventures, focuses on saving and expanding forests across the world and uses artificial intelligence to verify carbon credits.
The deal includes Mexican forest conservation powerhouse Toroto, S.A.P.I. de C.V., an essential bridge with the land-owning communities in which reforestation and conservation activities funded by Pachama will be carried out.
Pachama was advised on the deal by Mexican law firm Perroni & Associates, a firm that Is actively advising clients on carbon trading, green economy, ESG, energy infrastructure development and key environmental matters.
The firm’s founder, Héctor Velasco Perroni, described the deal as “very complex but rewarding”.
“We had to secure a financially healthy business for the company's investors and yet design a deal which final purpose is helping communities develop while taking care of their forest land. I think all parties were ecstatic when we all reached that goal in such a short amount of time,” he said.
For his part, Pachama’s general counsel, Jesse Mosier, said: "Hector's advice on this transaction was indispensable. His knowledge and experience working on carbon transactions and with ejido communities ensured we addressed both practical and theoretical risk in an efficient manner.”
Perroni & Associates is a Mexico City-based environmental law boutique firm.
