Garrigues has announced the incorporation of Manuel Groenewold as a partner in the banking and finance practice in Mexico City.

The appointment, which will be submitted for approval to the next partners’ meeting, means the Mexico City team will now have over 30 professionals and 8 partners.

With 30 years’ experience as an adviser to companies, financial institutions and public sector entities, Garrigues’ new partner has participated in major deals in the Mexican market as an expert in diverse areas of corporate/commercial law: capital markets, banking and finance, M&A, insolvency, restructuring and project finance, among others.

Manuel comes to Garrigues after serving as a partner at another law firm for 17 years.

Earlier in his career, Groenewold worked at the Mexican National Banking and Securities Commission, the Department of Finance and Public Credit, and the Bank Savings Protection Institute (IPAB). More recently, he has participated as a lawyer in groundbreaking fintech deals in Mexico, including advising on the obtainment of regulatory clearance for new financial institutions. He has also assisted numerous clients in highly regulated industries in the infrastructure, transport and aircraft sectors.

For Manuel, his incorporation constitutes "a huge challenge and an opportunity to continue growing as a professional at a firm as prestigious as Garrigues, with a strong base in Latin America and a clear commitment to the region and to Mexico in particular".

Jaime Iglesias, the partner in charge of the Mexico City and Bogotá offices, said Manuel’s incorporation “will add great value to an already strong team of professionals at the Mexico office, capable of approaching matters from a comprehensive, multidisciplinary and different perspective".

Javier Ybáñez, the senior partner of Garrigues and coordinator of the Latin American practice, added that "having a professional like Manuel Groenewold at the Mexico office strengthens the firm’s commitment to Mexico and to Latin America, enabling us to ensure a uniform service of the highest quality at all times, irrespective of the client’s location or the complexity of the transaction".

Garrigues is an international legal and tax services firm that advises clients locally, regionally, and globally from every angle of business law. Garrigues’ strength lies in its team of over 2,000 people working across multiple disciplines to resolve their clients’ problems.
