As DSM Avocats à la Cour celebrates its 20th anniversary, Leaders League spoke with Managing Partner Mario Di Stefano who, as a founding partner of the firm, has been instrumental in shaping DSM into one of Luxembourg’s leading full-service business law firms. Known for his pragmatic approach, international outlook and dedication to client service, Mario shares his insights on DSM’s journey thus far, its values, and what the future holds for the legal profession.
Leaders League: This year, DSM Avocats à la Cour celebrates its 20th anniversary. Can you reflect on the key milestones in the firm’s journey over the last two decades?
Mario Di Stefano: Our journey began in 2004, and since then, we’ve grown from a small team of three lawyers to a full-service firm with over 40 professionals, including six partners (Marie-Paule Gillen, Renaud Le Squeren, Alex Pham, Alban Colson, Jean-Philippe François and myself). Our growth has been driven by our core values ‒ excellence, international perspective, proximity, reactivity and availability. We’ve developed strong, long-term relationships with our clients by offering personalized, pragmatic solutions tailored to their needs. A defining moment was gaining recognition as a top-tier law firm in international legal directories such as Leaders League. Additionally, our international networks, meaning exclusive Luxembourg membership in several top-level law firm associations with global coverage, allows us to provide seamless cross-border services to our clients.
How has DSM Avocats à la Cour positioned itself within the highly competitive legal market in Luxembourg?
DSM has positioned itself by combining deep local expertise with the ability to provide strong international coverage through our networks as mentioned above. Indeed, as a member of several international legal networks, we can offer clients access to expertise in jurisdictions across the globe. Also, our boutique structure allows us to offer personalized services with an agility larger firms might struggle to match. This approach enables us to handle complex cross-border matters efficiently. And, our multilingual and multidisciplinary team ensures that we stay responsive to the individual needs of our clients, both in transactional and dispute resolution matters, where timing and precision are essential.
What is DSM’s value proposition, and how does it differentiate the firm from others in Luxembourg?
Our value proposition is based on delivering high-quality legal services that are pragmatic and personalized. We differentiate ourselves through our strong relationships with clients, built on trust, understanding their business and anticipating their needs. Moreover, our commitment to innovation is reflected in our use of advanced technology to streamline operations, including AI based platforms. So, what truly sets us apart is our ability to blend this technology with a human touch, ensuring that every client receives personalized and responsive service.
Looking ahead, how do you see DSM evolving in the next five to ten years?
Luxembourg’s evolving regulatory landscape offers exciting opportunities, and we’re well-positioned to help our clients navigate these changes. We will continue to invest in people and in technology while staying true to our core values. Our focus will remain on nurturing talent and fostering a positive workplace culture, as recognized by our Great Place To Work certification. Maintaining a balance between work and personal life is also a priority for us, ensuring that we create an environment where our people can thrive professionally and personally, and form a close-knit team. In a nutshell, we are expecting further growth in size and an increase in efficiency.
What is your vision for the legal profession and DSM’s role within it as the industry continues to evolve?
The legal profession is rapidly changing due to technological advancements and client expectations, as well as an evolving work culture with younger generations having more diverse career expectations. We are embracing these changes by integrating tools to boost efficiency, and organizing our work to keep up with these changes. We believe that technology should enhance ‒ not replace ‒ the human relationships that define our work. I think that for a firm like DSM Avocats à la Cour, the relationship between lawyer and client is intuitu personae, meaning that personal trust and connection are, and will remain, at the core of our services. Our vision is to stay ahead of industry trends while maintaining our commitment to personal, client-focused service. By combining innovation with our core values, we will continue to evolve in step with the legal profession and remain a trusted advisor to our clients.
