Greenberg Traurig Lands in Italy
American law firm Greenberg Traurig has strengthened its presence in the Italian market with the opening of an office in Milan in partnership with long established local law firm Santa Maria.
There is a longstanding relationship between the New York office and the Milanese boutique. Since 2005 Santa Maria has enjoyed an alliance with the international firm, benefiting from access to Greenberg Traurig’s 2,000 lawyers and 38 offices worldwide.
The merged firm will operate under the name Greenberg Traurig Santa Maria in Italy and will include all current professionals of the boutique founded by professor Alberto Santa Maria, and will immediately be joined by two new partners, Marzio Longo and Corrado Angelelli, formerly of Freshfields, who are specialized in real estate and financing and capital markets respectively.
With these two partner additions Studio Santa Maria now has 14 partners as well as two of counsel, 11 senior associates, seven associates and five trainees. The managing partner of the new firm will be the Luigi Santa Maria, a professional with many years’expertise in corporate M&A and private equity, who played a major part in these firm’s partnership pre-merger..
For several years now, professionals in the legal services market have underlined the increased strategic importance of US-Italian relations. The many investments made by Italian organizations on the other side of the Atlantic are a clear demonstration of the dynamism of the activity.
In recent years Greenberg Traurig, has worked on several Italian deals. One of the main operations carried out, according to Mergermarket, was the acquisition of Marazzi Group by Mohawk Industries. Other highlights include assisting Fontana Arte in its international expansion or, more recently, representing EcorNaturaSi in the acquisition of 63.4% of Organic Farma Zdrowia from Avallon, working on Amazon Web Services’ purchase of Nice srl andf participating in the pool of consultants assisting Foodpanda in the sale of a number of subsidiaries to Just Eat. With regards to the Italy-USA activity of the Santa Maria on the other hand, we can mention the assistance to Centerbridge in the purchase of Farmafactoring and representing Enel in the sale of some Dutch subsidiaries to Contour Global.
‘This is a unique opportunity given our close relationship with Studio Santa Maria and its highly regarded place in the Italian market,’ said Greenberg executive chairman Richard Rosenbaum. ‘For more than 50 years, we have guarded our unified, collaborative, and non-bureaucratic culture as we have grown, maintaining our core values of excellence and sincere respect and trust of the individuals on the ground in all our locations. This unique combination has resulted in a broad and deep platform while retaining the feeling of empowerment and ability to change.’
