Mistral AI acquires Emmi AI in landmark Austrian deep-tech exit
Publicado el 20 may 2026

Emmi AI has been acquired by Mistral AI in a transaction regarded as a defining moment for the Austrian start-up landscape. The deal comes only months after Emmi AI completed a record-breaking EUR 15 million seed financing round in April 2025 and represents one of the largest exits ever achieved by an Austrian technology start-up.
The transaction involved venture capital investors Speedinvest, 3VC, Serena Ventures and PUSH Ventures.
A strategic move in industrial AI
Founded in Linz in December 2024, Emmi AI emerged from the ecosystem surrounding Johannes Kepler University Linz and the NXAI initiative led by Sepp Hochreiter. The company specialises in “Physics AI”, developing artificial intelligence models capable of accelerating industrial simulations and engineering workflows.
Its technology targets industries with complex computational requirements, including energy, automotive, semiconductors and aerospace.
Mistral AI, founded in Paris in 2023, is one of Europe's leading artificial intelligence companies. By acquiring Emmi AI, Mistral AI aims to strengthen its position in industrial AI while further expanding its footprint across Europe.
Following completion of the transaction, Emmi AI’s team of more than 30 researchers and engineers will join Mistral AI’s science and applied AI divisions. Linz will also become an official Mistral AI location alongside Paris, London, Amsterdam, Munich, San Francisco and Singapore.
Austria’s AI ecosystem gains momentum
The acquisition highlights the increasing visibility of Austria’s artificial intelligence and deep-tech sector on the international stage. In recent years, the country has produced a growing number of AI-focused ventures attracting both international capital and strategic buyers.
The deal also reflects a broader consolidation trend within the European AI market, as leading players seek to strengthen technological capabilities and secure highly specialised engineering talent in a rapidly evolving competitive environment.
Multiple firms involved in the transaction
Several law firms advised on the operation. Schoenherr advised venture capital investors Speedinvest, 3VC, Serena Ventures and PUSH Ventures on the acquisition of the Linz-based engineering AI company Emmi AI by French AI leader Mistral AI. DORDA acted for the founders and the company, while Puttinger Vogl Rechtsanwälte and Oberhammer Rechtsanwälte advised NXAI. French law aspects were handled by Jeantet.
On the buyer side, Wolf Theiss, Binder Grösswang and Squadra Avocats advised Mistral AI.
