Ecuador’s Pérez Bustamante & Ponce adds partner

Ecuadorian law firm Pérez Bustamante & Ponce (PBP) has announced the addition of a new partner, Sebastián Cortéz, and who focuses his practice on energy and natural resources, infrastructure and projects, and corporate law.

Sebastián advises companies on all regulatory matters related to their operations and activities in Ecuador. He also works on corporate, environmental and dispute resolution matters.

“Given his commercial understanding of the sector and business nous, he is frequently invited to join companies’ senior management committees, where he advises on the legal risks associated with their activities,” the law firm said.

Prior to joining the firm, Sebastián held the position of partner at law firm Noboa, Peña & Torres, from 2013 until 2020, where he had held the position of associate between 2001-13.

He holds a law degree from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador, and an LLM in international legal studies from the  American University, Washington College of Law in Washington, DC., where he studied as a Fulbright scholar.

He has also taken courses in the US legal system at Tulane University Law School, and in tax management at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito.

He is a member of the Quito Bar Association and the International Bar Association.

In addition to the hiring of Sebastián, PBP recenty appointed five new directors, Andrés Brown (corporate and M&A), Belén Jaramillo (labor), David Ortiz (dispute resolution), María Isabel Aillón (mining) and Nicolás Maldonado (tax and corporate).

The five new directors were selected for their high level of performance, leadership, teamwork and clear commitment to PBP, the firm said.

PBP has offices in Quito and Guayaquil, and is the only Ecuadorian law firm that is a member of several renowned international networks simultaneously, including Lex Mundi, Interlaw, Employment Law Alliance, Insuralex and Club de Abogados Iberoamérica.
