Financial services partner rejoins Magic Circle firm after two years at Cleary Gottlieb.

Allen & Overy has welcomed back Bob Penn, with the highly regarded financial services regulatory expert set to rejoin the firm only two years after departing for Cleary Gottlieb.

Penn, who focuses on advising banks, asset managers and other financial institutions on regulatory issues, left in September 2016 after 17 years with the Magic Circle firm. His arrival at Cleary at the time marked a rarely seen lateral hire for the New York-headquartered firm.

Commenting on Penn's return, the firm's regulatory practice chair Damian Carolan said: “We are very excited to have Bob back at A&O. His depth of experience is an invaluable addition to our team at a time when the volume, complexity and breadth of financial regulation has increased exponentially. This is driving continued investment in the team to continue to support our financial services clients in facing sophisticated and evolving challenges.”

His return to Allen & Overy boosts the firm's regulatory practice to six partners, following on from the additions of Nick Bradbury from Herbert Smith Freehills in 2017 and Ben Regnard-Weinrabe from Paul Hastings this March.
