What success looks like in 2022

2020 shook up our Growth Leaders ranking like nothing before. Several companies, whose growth had been trending upwards in the past few years, were stopped dead in their tracks. Indeed, in 2020, the ability to continue to grow was often determined by which sector of activity a company belonged to: this year’s ranking has a preponderance of energy, tech and food & drink companies and a scarcity of media, event and leisure ones.

Nevertheless, this ranking showcases 500 companies, drawn from the length and breadth of Europe, which have succeeded in growing in remarkable fashion over a period of four years to the end of 2020. Having weathered the initial impact of covid, their prospects for continued growth are bright. Flexible, innovative and ambitious, they are some of the most dynamic companies in business in Europe today, shining beacons of what character, resolve and the right strategy can achieve.

Our ranking is based on information compiled by Belgian consultancy M5 using data provided by Bureau van Dijk, a Moody’s Analytics affiliate. The selection criteria are as follows.

The company must:

- Have had turnover of between €5 million and €1 billion in 2020

- Have registered growth of more than 20% between 2016 and 2020

To best reflect the diversity of European companies we factored in sector of activity and earnings band when compiling this ranking.
