Luca Mastromatteo leaves Gianni & Origoni for rival LMS

Having worked at corporate powerhouse Gianni & Origoni since 2005, where he has spent over a decade as a partner, M&A specialist Luca Mastromatteo has joined LMS Studio Legale. It is a move that significantly boosts the corporate capabilities of the M&A and finance boutique that was itself formed 15 years ago as a spin-off from Gianni & Origoni.

Mastromatteo was the managing partner of Gianni & Origoni’s Turin office, and will play a similar role at LMS, developing an integrated team that handles not only M&A but also commercial litigation. To begin with, his team will include associates Ilaria Chiolino Rava and Salvatore Calì, who join him from Gianni & Origoni.

Having served clients ranging from Piemonte Latte and Inalpi to Bottero and Andali Energia, Mastromatteo is a veteran of mid-market M&A, with complementary experience in joint ventures and leveraged buyouts. He developed his international outlook as a senior associate at Allen & Overy’s Turin office early in the millennium.

The arrival of Mastromatteo was a much-needed win for LMS, which lost M&A partner Gaia Guizzetti and transactional tax specialists Tomasso Amirante and Alfredo Malguzzi to Target, the corporate finance boutique they founded in April. Meanwhile, Gianni & Origoni also lost M&A expert Pietro Buccarelli to PwC in Bologna earlier this month. Its corporate bench is deep enough to sustain these losses – but the exit of both partners in one month raises the question of whether more departures are in the offing, and to what extent Gianni & Origoni will try to stem the flow.
