Four former Lobo & Ibeas partners, Virgilio Borba, Joaquim Simões Barbosa, Daniela Bessone and Flavia Cristofaro, have launched a new Rio-based firm with national ambitions: Borba, Simões Barbosa, Bessone, Cristofaro – BSBC Advogados.
Despite being a new name in the Brazilian legal market, BSBC Advogados already counts on highly experienced professionals such as mining heavyweight, Virgilio Borba, who has over 45 years of experience acting in high-end cases as well as seasoned dispute resolution lawyer, Joaquim Barbosa, who spent over three decades at his former firm.
Virgilio Cezar de Moraes Borba graduated in law from Universidade do Brasil, joined Lobo & Ibeas Advogados upon its inauguration in 1978 and accumulated well over four decades of experience during his time there. Mr. Borba is widely acknowledged as one of Brazil’s leading mining practitioners and is highly sought out for his counsel on mining-related M&A, greenfield development, infrastructure and environmental licensing issues.
Joaquim Simões Barbosa undertook a bachelor’s of law at Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) and an LL.M. at University of Illinois College of Law. After practicing law at Lobo & Ibeas for over 30 years, Mr. Barbosa will now provide legal services at BSBC Advogados where he will concentrate on commercial arbitration and litigation cases. Mr. Barbosa additionally serves as an arbitrator at Centro Brasileiro de Mediação e Arbitragem (CBMA).
Daniela Bessone earned an undergraduate degree in law from Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) and joined Lobo & Ibeas Advogados in 1988. Six years later, Ms. Bessone was made partner and has since then become an established lawyer in the Brazilian mining sphere. She is well-known for her expertise in sector-related M&A, land access and regulatory issues.
Flavia Savio Cristofaro obtained both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UERJ in addition to studying at the prestigious Hague Academy of International Law. Ms. Cristofaro joined Lobo & Ibeas in 1993 and was made partner in 2000. Now as a founding partner at BSBC Advogados, she will draw on her legal experience to advise on civil and commercial litigation, arbitration mandates as well as general business law.
In addition to the four abovementioned partners, BSBC Advogados has five other legal professionals within its team: Ariana Dias Pereira, Ciro Martins, Isabella Olivieri, Marina Gutierrez and Walkyria Rodrigues.
The firm’s core practice areas are described as strategic arbitration and litigation, commercial contracts, energy, infrastructure, mining, environment, corporate/M&A as well as intellectual property law.
Although BSBC Advogados is based out of Rio, the firm is well-equipped to represent clients in Brasília and São Paulo, as well as in other Brazilian states due to its cooperation agreements with other national firms.
