Carey, Chile’s largest law firm, has announced the promotion of two of its lawyers to director roles, which brings the firm’s total director count to seven

Chile’s Carey appoints 2 new directors

The two new directors are José Ignacio Mercado and Jorge Fuentes.

José Ignacio Mercado is part of the firm’s data protection, telecommunications, media and technology, pharmaceutical and biotechnology, and licensing, franchising and distribution groups. He graduated from University of Chile’s Law School and focuses his practice on matters relating to privacy, data protection and cybersecurity, as well as intellectual property and the development of strategies to protect intellectual and industrial property. His work has included the preparation, negotiation and implementation of technology transfer agreements, such as licensing agreements, franchising agreements, and distribution agreements.

He also has experience assisting technology companies with the preparation and implementation of commercial scaling-up and go-to-market actions, both in Chile and abroad.

His practice also includes advice on regulation in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food, and medical devices industries, as well as on topics regarding marketing and promotion of these products.

For his part, Jorge Fuentes is part of Carey’s intellectual property group and specializes in advising companies on the design and implementation of transformative innovation strategies based on the use of intellectual property.

He also provides expert advice on the processes of obtaining patents before the Chilean Institute of Industrial Property (INAPI) and several other authorities in this field in a number of countries.

He has been a teacher and lecturer in multiple national and international courses and conferences.

He graduated in civil engineering from the Universidad de Chile, and holds a master’s degree in business management and administration from the same university.

He is currently a PhD student at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, focusing his research on corporate strategies for innovation, entrepreneur
