Baptista Luz Advogados Appoints New Partners and Technical Directors
In January 2021, Baptista Luz Advogados announced new partners and technical directors.
In late January, São Paulo-based law firm Baptista Luz Advogados announced the promotion of two former associates, Érico Lopes Tonussi (M&A) and Sérgio Cury Meirelles (Venture Capital), to partners, as well as appointed two new technical directors, Fernanda Maellaro Ferreira (Tax) and Fabiano de Melo Ferreira (Contracts and Fintechs), and hired a new partner, Sandro Wainstein (Tax and Corporate Law), in a move that aims to reinforce the firm's practice and presence in the country as a whole.
Érico Lopes Tonussi has over 12 years of experience in the legal market and, despite Covid-19 issues, has successfully participated in many M&A transactions in the past year. He has previously worked for notable law firms and financial institutions such as Ulhôa Canto, Rezende e Guerra Advogados, Lacaz, Martins, Pereira, Neto, Gurevich & Shoueri, Citi, Lefosse Advogados and Vidigal Neto Advogados before joining Baptista Luz in 2019. Academically, Mr. Tonussi holds a Bachelor of Laws and Master’s degree in Commercial Law from Universidade de São Paulo (USP), as well as an LL.M. from University of Chicago (USA).
Mr. Meirelles, respectively, brings over 11 years of experience in Brazil and in the USA, specializing in international structuring and venture capital operations, as well as in advising startups in financing rounds, corporate governance issues, amongst others. He has previously worked at distinguished law firms such as Azevedo Sette Advogados, Opice Blum Advogados Associados, Natal & Manssur Sociedade de Advogados, PAG Law, CKR Law LLP and also mentored Sevna Startups. Academically, he obtained a Bachelor of Laws from Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie (UPM), a postgraduate degree in Corporate Law from Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV) and an LL.M. in Corporate Law from the Northwestern University (USA).
Baptista Luz’s new Tax technical director, Fernanda Maellaro Ferreira, has been a part of the firm for over 9 years. She has previously worked for well-known boutiques such as Dacol Cardoso, Fontes e Braga Advogados and SCT – Solutions Consultoria Tributária. Academically, she holds a Bachelor of Laws from UPM and a postgraduate degree in Tax Law from Pontifícia Católica de São Paulo (PUC-SP).
Fabiano de Melo Ferreira is the firm’s new Contracts and Fintechs technical director. He has previously worked for 13 years as an attorney for B3, the Brazilian Stock Exchange, and at respected law firm Albino Advogados Associados before joining Baptista Luz in 2015. Academically, he holds a Bachelor of Laws from Universidade São Francisco (USF), an LL.M. in Corporate Law from Insper and a postgraduate degree in Constitutional Law from Escola Superior de Direito Constitucional (ESDC). Currently, he is undertaking an LL.M. degree in Commercial Law from USP.
Additionally, Baptista Luz Advogados also announced the absorption of SV Wainstein Advocacia, a boutique law firm based in Porto Alegre/RS that specializes in Corporate and Tax Law, expanding the firm's practice in the South region of the country.
The expansion brings a new Corporate Law partner, Sandro Wainstein, which will also head the firm's practice in Porto Alegre.
Mr. Wainstein brings over 24 years of experience in the legal market, with a vast experience on tax planning and M&A transactions, as well as in administrative and civil litigation on corporate law-related issues. He has previously worked for former consulting giant Arthur Andersen & Co. before opening his own firm in 2006. Additionally, alongside his new challenge, he is also the director of the Câmara Brasil Israel de Comércio e Indústria, tax and legal advisor of Trust & Co. Investimentos, as well as a board member in Synergya Energias Renováveis.
Academically, Mr. Wainstein holds a Bachelor of Laws from Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUC-RS), a Master's in Corporate and Business Law from Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos (UNISINOS), a postgraduate degree in Tax Law from Instituto Brasileiro de Estudos Tributários (IBET) and undertook the Program of Instruction for Lawyers with a focus in Tax and Corporate Law from Harvard University (USA).
