Concluding a week spent representing ICC at the United Nation’s General Assembly, Mr Denton, highlighted how in an environment of mounting public distrust of global institutions, arbitration continues to give companies the level of trust they need to trade and to invest, giving them recourse to a relatively speedy alternative to litigation when disputes arise.
Attracting a turnout of more than 250 participants, representing almost 30 countries, the conference, which took place at the NYU School of Law, showcased how ICC was continuing to increase its global footprint and remains the world’s leading provider of Arbitration for commercial disputes.
Leading arbitration practitioners, independent arbitrators, in-house counsel and academics convened to learn from experts on areas including major developments in North America, presented by Kabir Duggal of Arnold and Porter, techniques to improve international arbitration with Greig Taylor of AlixPartners and how efficiency is money in arbitration with Eduardo Siqueiros T. of Hogan Lovells.
The conference also featured an interactive debate on the qualifications of arbitrators. Discussing whether arbitrators should be required to undergo formal training were Claudia Benavides Galvis of Baker Mckenzie, John Fellas of Hughes Hubbard, Susan Franck of the American University Washington College of Law and Christian Leathley of Herbert Smith Freehills.
On the eve of the conference, the ICC Institute of World Business Law hosted an advanced training. The one-day programme focused on the conduct of proceedings and case management from the arbitrator’s perspective.
